SPRINTS!

Hey everybody! Sprints are the word of the day! I did sprints at 6:30 in the morning and went back nearly 12 hours later and did some more. Afterwards I did a quick workout of 2 muscle ups, 2 handstand push ups, 4 chest to bar pull ups and 10 double unders. It was a good quick little workout and I really enjoyed it. I'm excited to workout tomorrow! I'll see you guys then!

SealFit on a Rest Day

Hey everybody! I'm feeling pretty good on my rest day! I did a lot of mobility work on my shins last night; as a result, I can walk now! Thank god for foam rollers and lacrosse balls! Below is a video from Rogue Fitness and SealFit. This particular video has a lesson in mental toughness. I will be posting a video from the SealFit series on all of my rest days, so they might be out of order a little bit. Copy, paste and enjoy the video and I will see you guys tomorrow!

Heavy Jerks And a 5K

Hey everybody, this is the second time I've typed this out because Blogger is JAMMIN me! Like I was saying before, the workout this morning was really good. Lifting heavy like that, that early in the morning really takes it out of me. After work I hit the 5K loop. It was a good run and I felt strong for the most part. My calves and ankles were really feeling those sprints yesterday. After the run I hung around the gym and did some mobility work on the foam roller and a lacrosse ball. For more info on that, check out www.mobilitywod.com. Thanks for the support everybody and I'll see you in the morning!

Filthy Fifty

Hey everybody! I had a great day of training today! I started the day off with Filthy Fifty. It was a great workout and I got a 30 second PR (personal record). I had a really hard time with the knees to elbows and once I got to the burpees, it was all heart. The gym was complete chaos! I don't think I've ever seen that many people in there. You guys are going to have to play where's Jesse through out the video! After a long rest, I went to a track and did 12 rounds of 200 meter sprints. I would run half a lap and walk half a lap. I'm pretty excited to workout tomorrow, I'll see you then!

Rest Day

Hey everybody! I had a great rest day for the most part. The only downside is a slight sunburn. When I say slight, I mean that only my arms and neck and not my whole body. I did some filming at a bmx jam that was held at our local bike park. Afterwards I went shooting with my friend Aidan. It was a whole lot of fun. I have posted a video below of one of my new heros by the name of Mikko Salo. He is an inspirational athlete, and I hope someday I will be able to be as strong as him. Enjoy the video, and I'll see you tomorrow for the WOD which will be Filthy Fifty!

Ropes, Cleans, and Running

Hey everybody! I had a great day of training today. The workout was a lot of fun, I'm a big fan of rope climbs and cleans, and I'm starting to like running more and more everyday. Jiu Jitsu was good. I'm pretty wiped out and I'm really glad I have a rest day tomorrow, I feel like I earned this one. I'll be filming for a BMX Jam that will be held at the Basin Bike Park tomorrow. So expect to see that video on here tomorrow. Until then, thanks for the support!

Thrusters And a 5K Row

Hey everybody! I had a pretty decent day of training today. I started off with thrusters in the morning and ended my day teaching at Flagstaff MMA. Between that, I was trying to find a track to run on but they are all locked up. So I gave up and went back to CrossFit Flagstaff and did a 5K row. I'm going to have to start hopping these fences to do some sprints. You can't get in trouble for running around in circles can you? It reminds me of my old, rebellious BMX days where I had to hop fences to ride the skate parks. So thats probably what I'll have to start doing. I won't tell anybody if you won't! See you tomorrow!

Deadlifts and Weight Vest Running!(Part 2)

Hey everybody, welcome to part 2 for the day! I had a really good day of training, I'm really tired but I'm looking forward to tomorrow. I wanted to see if I could run the 2 miles with the weight vest, and I was able to do that with great success and I'm probably going to make a habit out of that. Jiu Jitsu was a lot of fun and a lot of hard work. We did a lot of drills and practiced a lot of escapes. While we were practicing escapes, I made sure I was paired with the biggest and most skilled guys in there. It was a lot of fun, and I'm exhausted. I'll see you guys tomorrow!

Deadlifts and.....(Part 1)

Hey everybody, this post is going to come in two parts. Needless to say, this is part one. I saw this video on the CrossFit Games main site, and I could not wait to share with everybody. I was completely overwhelmed by the strength of this woman. Believe it or not, there is a link below. Click and be inspired! Part two will be coming this evening!

Rest Day!

Hey everybody, I am having a rest day and my body is really excited about it. However, I am not very excited at all. I'm 3 weeks out from competition, which means I only have 2 weeks of training left. I want to keep training so I am as strong as possible. Fortunately for me, my body won't allow that. So I will enjoy this day off, and I will be back at it tomorrow. The owner of CrossFit Flagstaff, Lisa Ray, posted this artical awhile ago. I thought it was really cool so I decided to share it on here. Check it out, and I'll see you guys tomorrow! Thanks for the support!

Girls Don’t Have Those

by Becca Borowski, Modern Athena
175822_10150395900470635_682815634_17088330_6000861_o
When I was growing up my friends would often remark on how soft my hands were. We would play clapping games or hold hands and someone would always compliment me on the texture of my skin. I took pride in it. Everybody likes to be the best at something.
Those days of soft hands have passed.
I do my best to take care of my hands now, but not in the name of vanity or in search of compliments, rather so that they don’t rip apart during my workouts. My tender palms have been replaced with calluses and tough skin. I get sad when I don’t do pull ups for a while and my calluses fade. I get mad at myself when I forget to file the calluses down before a workout. I take a strange pride in how much my hands can withstand.
The reactions I get from others has changed, too.
A few years ago I dated someone who didn’t do CrossFit. I was going through the stage where my hands were still toughening up. I was just learning to do pull ups without the rubber band, and my kip was still big and violent. My hands ripped a lot. I would show up at my boyfriend’s house with bandaged hands that I kept half curled up because I couldn’t straighten them without reopening the wounds.
“You don’t have those,” he would say and refuse to look at my palms or hold my hand. “Girls don’t have those.”
My students frequently ask me how to prevent their hands from ripping. I give them the basics of hand care. We talk about clippers, pumice stones and Dremels.
“How long will they keep ripping for?” They all want to know.
And this is what I tell them: It’s a process and you will go through a period where it’s really challenging. Your hands will rip all the time even if you take care of them. Eventually you will come out on the other side. It’s as if your hands have to toughen up from the inside out and the surface is the last thing to fully change. When you reach that point, you’ll hardly ever tear them up again.
Maybe that’s a bit like life. Maybe that’s how I got here, too — from the girl known for her softness to the hands I have today. Getting strong from the inside out.
A couple years ago I was in a Tai Chi class with an instructor I hadn’t met before. As I moved through the sequence, I pressed my hands outward and the instructor walked by me at just that moment. He glanced at my palms. “Those hands have seen some hard work,” he said to me…and smiled.

"Tillman"

This is the day that Tillman ruined my life! This is a workout where you do 7 rounds of 7 heavy deadlifts, a 200 meter wind sprint, and 15 pull ups. This was the first CrossFit workout I ever did, and I did it when I weighed 250 lbs. I am in incredible shape compared to when I did it back then, and let me tell you, it didn't help me out one bit. You are supposed to rest 45 seconds in between each round. I didn't rest between round 6 and 7 because I was ready to be done. The rest of the day I spent trying to recover. I was completely exhausted and ultimately decided to rest instead of going to Jiu Jitsu. I can't wait to get back to it on Wednesday! This workout is a Hero WOD named after Patrick Daniel Tillman (5.6.76 – 4.22.04) was a professional football player who left the National Football League and enlisted in the United States Army in May 2002. He joined the Army Rangers and served multiple tours in combat before he was killed in the mountains of Afghanistan. He was a recipient of the Silver Star, the third highest honor in the military, and a Purple Heart. Pat is survived by his wife Marie. He is also remembered through the foundation named in his honor; the mission being to inspire people to make positive changes in themselves and in the world around them.

Squats? Bikram?

Hey everybody, I had a pretty good day of training today.  I went to buffalo park and did 4 rounds of 400 meter run (1/4 mile) and 50 squats with a 20 lb. vest on. Afterwards I went to Bikram Yoga. Bikram is pretty rough for the most part. The room is well over 100 degrees with 98% humidity. The last time I did it was before my tournament last September. There was a pro fighter in town training with us named Jamie Varner and we talked him into do it with us on a rest day. That particular Yoga session just happened to be the most hard core Yoga session I have ever done. It was a packed house, so all the body heat made it significantly harder then usual. Even Jamie Varner had a hard time with it! The one I did today wasn't that bad at all, and I really enjoyed it for the most part. Thanks again for all of your support and I'll see you tomorrow!

Stadium Runs!

Hey everybody, I had a really solid day of training today. The workout this morning at CrossFit was really fun. It was a 400 meter run then 3 rounds of 10 squats, 5 push ups, and 10 wall ball followed by another 400 meter run. I had to carry the 20 lb. medicine ball on the 400 meter runs which of coarse was awkward and a pain, all of this while wearing a 20 lb. weight vest! My next workout was a stadium run with 5 X 4 minute rounds with a minute rest in between. I was wearing a vest for that one too. I used 2 different weight vests today. The first one is more compact and sits mainly on your chest so its easier to run with. The second one is more dispersed on the front and back and is definitely more awkward to use. Thats it until tomorrow, thanks for the support everybody!

Wendler Program

Hey everybody! We have started up the Wendler Program again. As a result, I went into CrossFit this morning to partake in the lifting portion of the workout. The Wendler Program is designed to make you stronger in a short amount of time. I am going to do my best not to miss a day of this because it really works well. We are focusing on 4 major lifts, the shoulder press, the bench press, the deadlift, and the back squat. My goal is to get up to 400 lbs. on my deadlift and 300 lbs. on my back squat. The Wendler Program will definitely help me reach those goals. I am going into Jiu Jitsu this evening because I am 3 weeks out from competition, therefore, I only have 2 weeks left of training left. Thanks for the support everybody!

The Philosophy:

  • Emphasize Big, Mulit-joint Movements
  • Start Too Light
Don’t take the lighter sets for granted. These will set you up mentally for the big sets. If these sets are light and explosive, you’ll feel confident and strong for your last set. If you take these lightly, or you take a carefree attitude toward them, your mind will not be right for the last set.
  • Progress Slowly
As you progress through this program, the weights will increase and getting more reps will get harder. If you progress slowly and start too light, you’ll continue to make progress over a longer period of time, and the last set will continue to be a motivating factor.
  • Break Personal Records (PR's)

How does it all work?

The program is split up into cycles, each cycle consists of four waves. Each wave is made up of four workouts, one for each lift. In other words, if you train four times a week, you hit each exercise once per week.  Each wave focuses on a 5, 3, or 1 rep max, giving the program its name.  Each workout is based on three sets of the major movement followed by a variety of accessory work (met con WODs for CrossFit). Sets and reps remain the same for the main movements in each wave.  During the fourth, and final, week of the cycle, you return to a 5 rep scheme using submaximal weight.  This built-in deload week allows for recovery and recuperation, setting you up to come back stronger with each passing cycle.
Before starting the program, you will need to know your one rep max for each of the big four.  From there, calculate 90% and use that 90% figure as if it were your real max, i.e. to calculate the percentages below. The idea is to undershoot so as to get better quality work and avoid failure.
Here’s the basic structure:
Wave 1: 65%x5, 75%x5, 85%x5 or more
Wave 2: 70%x3, 80%x3, 90%x3 or more
Wave 3: 75%x5, 85%x3, 95%x1 or more
Wave 4: 40%x5, 50%x5, 60%x5

Weight Vests Are The Future!

Hey everyone! I had a really good day of training today. The run felt great, I felt really strong and didn't really get tired. When I got to the gym I started messing around with the weight vest, I did 10 wall ball, 5 butterfly pull ups, 1 handstand push up, and a muscle up. The muscle up was by far the most difficult followed by the handstand push up in a very close second. Then I decided to do the workout with the vest on. This made the workout incredibly challenging, I might just make a habit out of that :D. Hopefully Youtube uploads my video this time, thank you everybody for your support!

Flippen Toes To Bar! (Fixed)

Hey everybody! I had a pretty good day of training considering how exhausted I was the whole day. The workout this morning had toes to bar in it. I am completely awful at toes to bar, needless to say, I'm over those flippen things and I could go without them for awhile to be honest with you! I have one more day of training before my rest day and I am really looking forward to that rest day, I'm not going to lie.  Thanks for your support and I'll see you guys in the morning!(Updated) Apparently, Youtube was unable to upload this video correctly. I shall rectify this inexusable situation as soon as I get home. Stay tuned!

Act Like I Posted This Yesterday!

Hey everybody! I had a fantastic weekend of training, and I'm definitely feeling the effects! The workout known as Amanda defeated a lot of people in the gym, and only one of them finished in the allotted time. The second workout of the day went a lot better for me as it was the only workout I was able to finish in the allotted time of 20 minutes. The toes to bar really slowed me down but I chugged through them and got to the 100 ft. of overhead lunges. Once I got to the 50 foot mark Noah passed me and all of the sudden I was in a race! He dropped his plate at the 75 foot mark and I was able to catch up to him, from there it was a full on sprint to the finish. I'm actually posting this on my rest day and I'm really excited to get back to it tomorrow! See you then, and as always, copy, paste and enjoy!

Regionals Workouts Day Two

Hey everybody! I had a pretty fantastic day of training today. The workouts were a lot of fun, as well as, incredibly difficult and challenging. Just the way I like it! I had an epic fail with my camera as I neglected my erasing duties. As a result, the memory card filled up and the camera turned off right when I started the first workout. I learned from my mistakes, and rectified the problem immediately. I apologize for being shirtless in the second workout out as I don't look in as good of shape as I am. That was one of the main reasons I was going to pull out of Grapplers Quest was because my weight hasn't come down at all in the last 2 months. As you all know, I decided to compete regardless of weight and come into the competition in as good of shape and as strong as possible. As always, copy, paste, enjoy, and I appreciate the support!

Regionals Day 1 Workout + King of the Hill

Hey everybody, I had a fantastic day of training today! The first workout was from the CrossFit Games Southwest Regionals that are happening in Colorado right now. It was 1000 meter run, 30 handstand push ups and a 1000 meter row. The time cap was 15 minutes and I didn't make it. I got penalized 1 second for every meter I had to go and I was at 630 meters at the time cap. It was a fun workout. I should have started kipping the handstand push ups earlier. Jiu Jitsu training was outstanding this evening. We worked a lot of drills and then we played king of the mountain for 45 minutes. King of the mountain, you start out with 2 groups of 2 in the middle, and whoever gets the takedown or gets points stays in the middle while the other gets eliminated. It was awesome and I was completely exhausted at the end of it.  Thanks for all the support!

Recovery Is Essential

Hello, my name is Jesse, and I'm a recovering athlete. It's hard for me to admit, but I was difinitely overtrained. As you can tell from the previous post, I took yesterday off and I will take today off as well. All I will be doing is teaching over at Flagstaff MMA this evening. Tomorrow we will be doing the WODs (Workout of the Day) from the CrossFit Games Regional Competition. The first workout of the day will be a 1,000 meter run 30 handstand push ups and 1,000 meter row. Tomorrow is the day! I will be back on track with my videos, and back to training hard! Grapplers Quest will be here before I know it and I'm coming home with the gold! I'll see you guys tomorrow, and thanks for the support!

Rest Day (Kinda)(Revised)

Hey everybody! I am taking a "rest" day today, and I might be taking one tomorrow as well. The reason I say "rest" is because, the way I see it, only training once in one day is considered rest for me. You can call me crazy if you want to, but the reality is, I am just over a month out from competition and I need all of the Jiu Jitsu training I can get. Plus tomorrow evening I have to teach over at Flagstaff MMA. Starting this Friday, we are doing the regional competition workouts over at CrossFit Flagstaff. These particular workouts are going to be more rugged then usual and I am really looking forward to them. These packed on top of my normal training is going to be pretty gnarly. There will be 2 workouts a day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I'm really looking forward to it! You won't be seeing videos from me till Friday. I'm sure they will make up for it though. Thanks again for all of your support! (Revised part) I came to the decision after I wrote this that I am indeed over trained and need to take a few days off. Today being one of them. Tomorrow I'm teaching and thats it. Friday I'm back with a vengeance! Until then, copy, paste and enjoy this motivational video!

Weighted Pull Ups Are Awesome!

What's up everybody! I had a really good day of training today. I did weighted pull ups this morning, then went for a 5K run (3.2 miles) after work. The run was pretty gnarly after doing the 400 meter sprints on Sunday. My shins and ankles where hurting the whole time and I was getting cramps pretty bad. I fought through it and I'm a stronger athlete because of it, or at least I would like to think so. I finished the day at Flagstaff MMA with take down drills and some rolling. All in all it was a pretty productive day and I'm pretty excited about it! I'm taking tomorrow morning off and all I'm doing is Flagstaff BJJ tomorrow evening. Thanks for your support and as always, copy and paste!

Heavy Deads

I'm happy to report that I had half of a rest day today, and I feel pretty good about it. My shin splints are acting up pretty bad from the sprints yesterday. I didn't sleep to well last night, so I woke up pretty exhausted to begin with, which of coarse didn't help my cause at all. I plan on getting a good nights sleep this evening at attacking tomorrow with a fury of a thousand suns.  I'll see you guys in the morning and as always, copy, paste and enjoy!

The Epic Battle With Fight Gone Bad

Hey everybody, I sincerely apologize for not posting yesterday. First problem was I didn't bring my camera with me and second I didn't charge my I Pod which of coarse equals epic blog fail! I also failed at one of CrossFits benchmark workouts, Fight Gone Bad. Its 3, 5 minute rounds with a minute rest in between. You do 5 separate workouts, wall ball, sumo deadlift high pull, box jumps, and a row for calories for a minute each. I got a horrible score yesterday at 252 reps. My previous personal record was 276. So I was very disappointed. So this morning I came in this morning refocused and ready to kick it in the face. I ended up getting 299 reps which was 1 short of my goal and getting in the coveted "300 Club". In the world of CrossFit, 300 reps is a very legit score and I'm proud of myself for getting that far! I finished the day with 10 rounds of 400 meter sprints, it was pretty awful but its what I need to do to accomplish my next goal which is a gold medal at Grapplers Quest. Copy, paste and enjoy! I'll see you guys bright an early tomorrow morning!

Rest Day Earned!

Hey everybody, happy June 3rd! I really wanted to run this morning, but I woke up at 4:30 in the morning and couldn't get back to sleep. I have a really hard time get runs in for some reason huh? I thought about taking a rest day tomorrow too, based solely on the fact that the workout is Fight Gone Bad! I am actually feeling pretty good, so I am going to go in there and give it everything I got! I know I told everybody that I wasn't doing Grapplers Quest in July. But the reality is, I'm on the fence. I'm in good shape so I might just go in at this weight and give these guys a fight! I've had a pretty rugged week emotionally. Thank you everybody for all your support! I'll see you tomorrow!

Day Before Rest Day

Today was a very good day, the first workout was 5 chest to bar pull ups, 10 wall ball with a 20 pound ball, and 15 kettle bell swings with a 53 pound kettle bell. It was a lot of fun, but it really wiped me out. Needless to say, I was very excited to rest for most of the day. After work I went in and did a 5k row(3.2 miles). I didn't get a chance to do my weakness WOD, but thats alright, I'm pretty sore right now. I'm going to rest all day tomorrow, minus a run. The run greatly depends on the amount of smoke in the air. There is a huge fire going on just outside of Flagstaff in a town called Bellmont. So we'll see how it goes. I seam to always start out with a plan, and sometimes it goes that way and sometimes it doesn't. Thank you all for your support and I'll see you on Saturday!

Rope Climb Shin Burn!!

I had a pretty good day of training today. I wasn't able to get a run in, but thats ok because I plan on doing a lot of cardio work tomorrow. We had a really good Jiu Jitsu class today. We played king of the mountain with takedowns. This means that there are 2 people in the center and they try for takedowns. The person that succeeds gets to stay in the middle and get a new opponent while the guy who got taken down goes to the side and waits for his turn to try again. I did fairly well and only had to sit out for a few minutes or so. We had 2 gigantic guys in there that I was able to take down on a regular basis, so I was pretty excited about that. Once again, thank you for everybody's support, and I'll see you tomorrow. Please don't forget to copy and paste the video in your browser!

Not Dead, Can't Quit

Hey everybody, obviously I didn't post yesterday and I apologize for that. Yesterday sucked for me. Not only was I a little bit over trained, but I also had a signifigant speedbump in my personal life that left me "not in the mood". I did go to the 6:30 a.m. class and it was 7 sets of 1 push jerk to get my one rep max lift. One rep max lifts are hard to get that early in the morning. I have also decided to pull out of Grapplers Quest in July and start training for Grapplers Quest in October in Denver, Colorado. The reason being, I have not had the training I feel like I would need to compete. I haven't had any training partners that are willing to train outside of their normal training like I did last time. My weight has not come down at all. I have been 200 pounds for the last 2 months and the reality is, I should be down to at least 185 by now. At this weight, I would be considered a heavyweight, and I would be going up against individuals weighing anywhere from 200 to 260 lbs. And frankly, I'm just not into that. So this will be a time for me to reboot, start over, and attack this training full throttle. My new motto that I have adopted from a Navy Seal is "Not dead, can't quit." I'll have a new video up tonight. Thank you all for your support.
